If you are a Grab, Foodpanda, Lalamove, or ShopeeFood rider in Malaysia, you already know the hustle. You are out there braving the rain, the potholes, and the crazy traffic. Because you are your own boss, you don’t have a traditional HR department taking care of your medical leave or accident insurance.
That is exactly where SOCSO’s SKSPS (Skim Keselamatan Sosial Pekerjaan Sendiri) comes in.
Recently, you might have heard a lot of buzz about a new “24-hour SOCSO scheme” and mandatory contributions for 2026. Here is the breakdown of what SKSPS actually is, how much it costs, and why every gig rider should seriously consider it.
What is SKSPS & Clearing the “24/7 Scheme” Confusion
SKSPS is an insurance scheme by PERKESO specifically designed to protect self-employed individuals and gig workers. Under the PERKESO umbrella, the gig worker scheme is known as LINDUNG KENDIRI.
Wait, what about the 24/7 Scheme?
In June 2026, PERKESO launched a new 24-hour protection scheme (SKBBK) that covers accidents at home or on weekends. However, that specific 24/7 scheme is for standard employees (under Act 4).
As a gig rider, your SKSPS (Act 789) protects you whenever you are working. From the second you turn on your driver app to the moment you deliver your last parcel and head home, you are fully covered against any work-related accidents.
How Much is the Deduction? (2026 Contribution Rates)
The best part about SKSPS is that it is flexible. You pay once a year, and you can choose a plan that fits your budget. Here are the 4 official contribution plans for a full year of coverage:
- Plan 1: RM157.20 / year (About RM13.10 a month)
- Plan 2: RM232.80 / year (About RM19.40 a month)
- Plan 3: RM442.80 / year (About RM36.90 a month)
- Plan 4: RM592.80 / year (About RM49.40 a month)
Good News for 2026: Under the recently passed Gig Workers Act 2025 and Budget 2026, the government is subsidising 70% of the SKSPS contribution for first-time registrants in non-mandatory sectors. This means your out-of-pocket cost is incredibly low for your first year!
Is It Worth It? (Why You Should Take It)
Ask any rider who has had a bad spill on the road—medical bills and lost income will wipe out your savings in days. Paying as low as RM157.20 a year is 100% worth it when you look at the protections:
- MC Allowance (Temporary Disablement): If you crash and get an MC from the doctor for at least 4 days, PERKESO pays you a daily allowance while you rest. Depending on your plan, they pay between RM30.00 to RM105.33 per day.
- Medical Bills (Rawatan Perubatan): You can claim reimbursement for the medical costs you paid at the clinic or hospital.
- Permanent Disablement: If an accident leaves you permanently disabled and unable to work, you will receive a lump sum or monthly payment (up to 90% of your insured income plan).
- Family Protection (Dependants’ Benefit): If the worst happens and a rider passes away on the job, their spouse and children (under 21) will receive a monthly pension (90% of the insured income) to help them survive.
How Do You Claim?
If you get into an accident while doing your gig:
- Get Treated: Go to the nearest clinic or hospital. Keep all your original receipts and get a clear Medical Certificate (MC) from the doctor (must be 4 days or more to claim the daily allowance).
- Gather Proof: Keep your police report, dashcam/helmet cam footage, and screenshots showing you were on an active job in your gig app.
- Submit to PERKESO: You can submit your claims at any PERKESO counter, or even easier, manage your SKSPS profile using the official Prihatin App.
